Senior Final

If I were to give advice to a student taking this class next year I would have a few things to say. First, and most importantly, do not take it too seriously. You are not writing essays to get into an ivy league college, there is no need to try and impress anyone. Be yourself and have fun with it. I am the person who stresses out trying to make my writing perfect but this class allowed me to just put to paper, or computer rather, whatever was on my mind. This class allows you to think about what is important to you in your life and what means the most to you. Do not worry about sounding stupid because it’s your blog and your personality should show through, no matter how weird it is! And if I am being honest, most of the class will not read all of your blog posts anyway. Some of the posts overlap in ways, and by the end of the class you will be able to see some aspects of your life you brought up again and again without even realizing it. You will learn about yourself without even trying!

My favorite blog post was “Abstract Nouns”. For this post we were required to come up with metaphorical definitions by comparing or relating fifteen abstract nouns to some kind of concrete noun.  An abstract noun is something that cannot be perceived with the five senses, most of the time an idea or feeling. We had to come up with fifteen of these abstract nouns and compare them to something concrete that CAN be perceived with the five senses. Out of the fifteen definitions I created, my favorite one read “Hope is a hand holding you tight.” I thought this definition fit perfectly because it reminded me of one of the blogs we wrote about being hopeless. The definition explains what helps us hope again. When someone you love believes in you and holds your hand through it helps you regain that hope. I liked this post because it was almost poetic. It let each of us give our own meaning to very abstract ideas and show what each of those things meant to us. It let us bring to life the pictures we have in our mind when we think of those words.
When looking back at the blogs I posted throughout the semester I see I had a lot of fun with them. My sarcastic personality showed through in some and in others my more serious and deep side appeared in writing. I revealed a lot about myself and had a lot of fun in the process. The one most important thing I learned from the class is that writing does not have to be a big, serious, difficult task. Like I said, I stress out when I am given a writing assignment trying to plan what I am going to say. The fast pace of this class and laid back assignments allowed me to let loose and just have fun with it. I realized I am actually a good writer and I enjoy it when I am not worried about what everyone will think of it. In the end, I have had a lot of fun in this class and I have really enjoyed looking back on all my posts and getting to enjoy all of my writing as well as everyone else’s. It was actually really nice to kind of just relax my last semester and compile a fun blog about my life instead of writing five page research papers!

Epilogue

As I reflect on the Personal Writing Portfolio I have compiled over the past month or so, a few things stick out to me.  Some of the blog assignments that seemed to be an easy task turned out to be pretty difficult once I started writing. Assignments that made me write about my good qualities or what I liked about myself turned out to be quite a challenge. I learned it’s actually quite hard to write about myself in a positive light. Not that I don’t see anything positive about myself, I just feel uncomfortable writing about it.

I wrote a lot about learning not to worry about things I cannot change or little things that don’t matter and that is something I need to work on. This semester has helped me kind of relax and learn to go with the flow.

This semester has also helped me learn to just write and not think so hard about what I want to say. I tend to make writing assignments much harder than they should be and this helped me just open up and write whatever was on my mind. Looking back I like my style of writing and enjoyed writing many of my posts.

In my Personal Writing Portfolio I showed how much my family and friends mean to me. I have expressed how anxious and nervous I am for the future and all that lies ahead of me. Writing in the midst of my last months of high school made my nostalgic side shine through. I am excited for the next chapter of my life but everything I will be leaving behind is just beginning to hit me and many of the things I mentioned in my blog will no longer be an everyday occurrence.

If I could describe myself in three words after compiling this portfolio they would be:

Ambitious- I want to get the most I can out of life. Whether it is in a career or just in general, I want to be the best I can possibly be. I want to take advantage of the opportunities I am given. I aim high and set goals I must work to achieve.

Caring- I am so blessed to have amazing people in my life whether it is my family, friends, or coworkers. I would do anything for them and I love putting a smile on people’s faces. I hate to see people I love hurting. I try to show those around me how much they mean to me and try to make them feel special.

Passionate- It could be something trivial like talking about baseball or The Office, or something meaningful in my life I put myself into everything I do. I don’t like to do things halfway and if something means something to me and I will pour my heart and soul into it.

A Fine Line

The Best Things About Myself:
  • I apply my intelligence
  • I grow nice hair
  • I am witty/sarcastic
  • I am a planner
  • I work well under pressure
  • I have a rather nice vocabulary
  • I like to bake and most of the time it tastes pretty darn good
  • I am loyal
  • I can adapt easily and I like to try new things
  • I am caring and sentimental
The Worst Things About Myself:
  • I can't handle rejection
  • I can be too nice
  • I underestimate myself
  • I overanalyze EVERYTHING
  • Technology scares me
  • I am always tired
  • I am impatient
  • I worry about things that don't matter
  • I am not good at coping with a change of plans
  • I am a procrastinator
  • I am chronically late

Valuable Lessons

1. Stick to your morals- The firmer I am in my morals now the easier it will be to stick to them later. I know not everyone believes the same things I do so I have to be very careful not to be tempted by those around me.
2. Enjoy it while you can- As my high school years draw to a close I realize all the things that will be changing. I've become especially aware in recent months to enjoy the moment I'm in rather than wait for what is coming next.
3. How to write an essay- God bless Mrs. Crystal Charles. She made writing an essay so much simpler and I couldn't have made it through a lot of classes without that skill. I know it will help me out a lot in college as well.
4. Give more than you take- giving is so much more rewarding than receiving. I love the feeling of making someone else smile and I've learned the world would be a much better place if everyone gave more than they took.
5. The little things in life are where you find the most happiness- The simple pleasures we take for granted are what make me the most happy. When you learn to enjoy all the little blessings around you it will make life so much better.
6. Be spontaneous- Sometimes you just need to take an adventure. When your at a point in your life when everything is scheduled and you're hopping from one place to the next trying to get things done, doing something spontaneous will relieve some stress and create memories you'll never forget.
7. Good company makes even the worst jobs worth it- I have been so blessed to make some of my greatest friends through my job. On the days when I hated coming into work, working with the right people made it worth it. Even away from the job, anything miserable can be made better with the right people by your side.
8. Don't believe everything you hear- Figure things out for yourself. Listen to others but be skeptical to believe everything they say. Some people in life will tell you what you want to hear to get something they want so be careful.
9. Don't dwell on the things you can't change- I worry about things I shouldn't and it causes a lot more stress than I need. I feel much better just going with the flow and realizing that some things will go wrong and there's nothing I can do about it.
10. Be an overachiever and realize that things worth having come in God's time- Go above and beyond in everything you do, it never hurts. The higher you aim, the higher you will be even if you fail. Be patient, and know that if it is in God's plan it will happen. Work hard and have faith.

Twenty years from now this is what I want to remember

  3. Going to sports games with my best friends and enjoying it all while it lasted.
  4. Not having a computer, internet, or cable and surviving just fine.
  5. Counting down the days until the weekend, always looking forward to what was coming next.

  9. Being excited to go work, even though every day wasn't a good one.
  10. The countdown to my eighteenth birthday, graduation, and my senior trip knowing the next few months would be some of the most memorable.
  11. Coming to realize all the blessings God gave me and everything I left behind when I started a new chapter of my life.
  12. Developing as a person and growing up to realize my potential; that anything I wanted I could have if I worked for it.
  13. Learning not to care what other people thought and living life for myself and the people who meant the most to me.
  14. Becoming outgoing and confident and being happy with myself.
  15. Learning to live apart from my sisters and cherishing what time I got to spend with them.
  16. Holding on to the last few months with my parents and learning to live without them.
  17. Realizing the impact my teachers had on me and all the things they taught me in and out of the classroom.
  18. The fact that life moves quickly so enjoy as much of it as you can and don't waste time on things that don't matter.
  19. Making the most of every situation and always seeing the positive.

Synetics

Which is more difficult? a dream or a nightmare?
A dream is more difficult because it opens your mind up to what could be. In a nightmare, you can't wait for it to be over and wake up to a better reality. In a dream, you have to wake up to a reality that may not be so perfect and all you want to do is fall back asleep and live the dream instead.
Which is more trustworthy? history or literature?
History is much more trustworthy than literature because you can't change it. Literature is so open to interpretation and is very much in the eye of the beholder. History is facts, even if you don't like what it has to say, it tells the truth.
Which is sadder? seek or find?
To seek is much more sad than to find. When you find something, even if it makes you angry or sad, at least it is over. Seeking leaves a longing inside you that can only be satisfied when you find what you're looking for.
Which is easier to close? a road or a map?
A map is easier to close because, well, it's a piece of paper. There really isn't a figurative way for me to explain this. Closing a road requires manpower and planning and causes a lot of frustration.
Which is braver? an hour or a year?
A year is braver. Making a year long commitment to anything requires a lot of bravery and is a much bigger commitment than a mere hour. I would much rather screw up just an  hour of my life as opposed to a year.
Which is more fearful? new or old?
New is more fearful. New is something we are not used to and don't know what to expect. Old, whether good or bad, is still familiar. New means starting something unknown which is very scary for a lot of people.
Which is more suspenseful? rain or snow?
Snow is more suspenseful. Rain washes things away and may reveal things that were once hidden. Snow covers everything in a clean, white blanket and can distort the most atrocious things and make them beautiful. Lots of things can be hidden under the snow.
Which is more useful? a friend or an enemy?
A friend is more useful. When you are in a bind your true friends will always have you back. A friend will make sacrifices for their friends and if an enemy is being used its probably for some kind of dirty work anyway.
Which has less charm? a signature or an autograph?
An autograph has less charm because it is less personal. An autograph is given to hundreds or thousnads of people and only has sentimental meaning to the receiver. A signature has meaning from the signee, whether its on a document or a love note, it shows that person agrees with what they're saying.
Which costs more? a home or a house?
A house costs more because a home doesn't have to cost money at all. A home is where you feel most comfortable and secure and that doesn't come from buying a large house or fancy decor. Love and family does not cost anything and that is the main thing that makes a home.

10. I feel sentimental when I think about graduation and growing up. I just picture myself in younger years daydreaming about the place I am in life right now. After graduation many things will change and there is a lot I know I will miss.

Extended Metaphors

If I were a car, I would be a Buick because I act like an old lady but people still like me. I say this because when I think of a Buick I imagine old people driving it. People tell me I am like a grandma in the way I dress and act sometimes. Buicks appeal to the older generation and I am pretty good at getting along with people much older than me. Although Buick's appeal to older people, young people still like them too. My friend bought a Buick and even though it is sometimes referred to as a "grandma car" people of all ages like it. Buicks are also a really dependable car and I am dependable as well.

If I were a day of the week, I would be a Sunday because I'm laid back. When I think of Sundays I just think of a nice, relaxing day with church, family, and a nice long nap. Sundays are the Lord's day and God is a big part of my life. Naps are one of my favorite things and I consider myself a nap enthusiast. I absolutely love spending time with family and Sundays are the day I get to do that. My cousin in Joplin is very important to me and I get to see her almost every Sunday. Sundays are a day to just sit back and enjoy all I'm blessed with which is something I try to do every day.

If I were a food, I would be an appetizer because where I am right now is only the beginning. Appetizers are like the opening act, there's much more to come. I am at a point in my life where everything is just beginning and I have a lot more to accomplish and become. Appetizers are usually a party favorite, especially at my family gatherings. I love family get-togethers and who doesn't love a party? I like to imagine appetizers as the laid back food, just casual but they can also get pretty elaborate. Like appetizers, I can be laid back and I also love getting all dressed up and fancy.

The Ultimate All-Purpose Excuse

Honestly, I've never really gotten into BIG trouble, which I am very thankful for. Then again, we all have our run-ins with trouble, including me. I don't really lie to my parents about anything because I don't do anything they don't know about anyway. Normally my parents are pretty easygoing when it comes to curfews and stuff like that. For example, last night I had a curfew of one o'clock. I left to go home around 12:55 and before I left I texted my mom "On my way" like I always do when I'm headed home. I didn't get home in five minutes and walk in the door before one but my mom didn't mind I was a few minutes late, especially since I texted her before I left.
Now, if I were ever in a situation where I had to come up with some excuse for being out past curfew, it wouldn't be anything big and fancy but I bet it would work. So here it is, if I was ever out past curfew my ultimate excuse would simply be, "We fell asleep." My mom would definitely buy it. I am a teenager after all. She knows I'm always tired and take a nap every chance I get. I don't think she would be upset if I used that excuse. My curfew might not be as late next time but I would expect that anyway. That excuse could get me out of a lot of stuff, and sometimes its even true. I have slept through my youth group on Wednesday nights before because I took a nap and slept right through my alarm. So if I ever need an excuse, I'll know what to use.

What's in a Name?

Laura Ann Dieckhoff. That’s what they’ll say when I walk across the stage at graduation. WHOA. I think a name carries a lot of weight with it. There are just some names that bring to mind a certain characteristic; some you think, that is a grandma name or that one just makes me think of a snob.

I like to think my name has a nice story to go with it. When I was born my mom was deciding between the names Abby and Laura. There is a cute family video we have of when I had just been born and my three sisters were sitting on the bed while mom was holding me. They were discussing names and, of course, all of my sisters had an opinion of their own. My oldest sister, Kayla, wanted to name me Tina. Thank goodness Mom vetoed that one. If you have ever seen the movie Napoleon Dynamite you know what I mean when I say I would not want to be compared to a llama for the rest of my life. The sister closest in age to me, Lindsey, had one the worst ideas I have ever heard.. granted she was just three years old. Her brilliant name? Bruster. Just imagine a child who cannot pronounce their “r”s spewing out that one during the brainstorm session. Amanda was really the only sane one of the group. As I mentioned, Mom had narrowed it down to Abby and Laura. When Mom mentioned Abby, Amanda chimed in and gave her vote: Laura. When Mom gave birth to me my umbilical cord was in a knot so there were a few complications. I have always heard the story that when they were trying to decide, the nurse told Mom she should name me Laura because it means gift from God and I was really lucky. I have yet to prove that true but I like to think it is.

My middle name comes from my grandmother, my mom’s mom. Her name is Ann and Mom had always wanted to include that in one of her daughters’ names.

Even though people rarely pronounce it right, I love my last name. Both of my dad’s parents are German and our name is of German origin. For the record, it’s pronounced dee-cough. I find the thought that it may not be my last name forever very weird. I cannot imagine having a different last name at my funeral because it is a part of my identity and has become a part of me.

I have plenty of nicknames, and most of them I really like. All in all, I think my name suits me really well.

Prologue

Hey guys! (and gals I suppose) If you have not already realized, this is a blog I recently created for a Creative Writing class I am taking. My posts are mostly just replies to prompt assignments I am given and this post begins a new series. Over the next month or so I will be compiling a Personal Writing Portfolio here on my blog for all of you to (hopefully) enjoy.

Just so all of you know, if I had a blog that had not been created for the purpose of a grade my posts may be a little bit different. I would probably be a bit more snarky, and a lot more sarcastic. As the purpose of this portfolio is to express myself and delve deeper into my writing abilities, I will attempt to hold nothing back. I have really started to enjoy writing this year and hope that feeling continues for at least a couple more months!

In my effort to tell you a little bit more about myself, I feel telling you about my mother may help you understand the origin of my personality. My mom loves to tell me I was adopted; that they found me under an overpass on the interstate when I was a baby. She once stuck a Cheeto up her nose at a family gathering just to see how my two year-old cousin would react. She is a walking book of useless information and can find out a person’s entire life story in the time it takes to fly from Denver to Los Angeles. I am very much my mother’s daughter in many ways. I am a self-proclaimed weirdo and often wonder how I have so many friends.

I have three wonderful older sisters and sometimes miss having them around the house…sometimes. I spend a lot of time with some people I like to call my second family; my aunt, uncle, and cousins who live nearby in Joplin. We always have a good time at family get togethers. I could not ask for a better family and I thank God every day for them.

I am a senior in high school and as of today there are only forty-one more days until I am finally a high school graduate! I am very excited to begin the next chapter in my life although I am still not quite sure what that entails yet. In the past few months I have begun to realize everything I will miss about moving away and find myself appreciating the little things more and more each day. I will miss time with my family and friends but I am more than ready to go to college and begin a new experience. I know I will be living in Kansas City next year I am just not sure of which school I will be attending. I know the next two months will fly by so I hope to share some of my last high school experiences with all of you! Stay tuned!

Just Keep Swimming

“No one has the right to sit down and feel hopeless. There’s too much work to do.”

The words of Dorothy Day are what I consider a large struggle for many people. At times it takes all we have to keep going instead of sit down and wallow in self-pity when everything seems to be going wrong. The fact is if we do not overcome that overwhelming feeling, nothing will ever get accomplished. If everyone constantly gave in to that urge to give up our world would be a very different place. We would not have leaders. That is why in our upcoming generation it is so important to realize our place in the world and what we want and need to contribute.

The work to be done for our generation is not a small task. We have grown up in the new age of a technology boom. Things that were new when our parents were our age were quickly replaced by the newer and better. In turn, much of the technology that is common in our everyday lives is even younger than we are. Our generation is often blamed for being too dependent on technology, which may very well be true. The undertaking we are left with is finding a balance between useful technology and useless technology. The difficulty is figuring out when it passes the point of being a beneficial tool and into the realm of a crutch for the lazy to lean on.

Our work is not only in navigating the technology that bombards us day in and day out. It is also our job to find a unique contribution. We all add to the people and tasks we are presented with in a different way. I think our generation struggles with finding their purpose in life. Once we find what we love to do and what we are meant to do we should be using that to make a positive impact. Sometimes, all the work there is to do is get through the day. If it comes to the point where we are so hopeless we cannot even do that, the larger problems that face us will not even begin to be solved.

Do we have the right to feel hopeless? When I think about this, I agree with Dorothy Day. There is too much in this world to explore, learn, and uncover for us to lie down and feel there is nothing of worth for us. The problem with that thought is that we are all weak. We can tell ourselves all we want that there is too much good in life for us to be sad, but that will not stop us from feeling empty anyway. There are times in life when we break. When that happens I think it is okay to take a second and feel broken, as long as it does not last. We cannot stay in that mindset forever. We have to regroup and stand back up, and finish the work to which Day is referring.

I Don't Even Know What I See Myself Eating for Dinner Tonight

I would be lying if I said I never thought about the future. We have all done it since we were little kids. We thought about what our house would look like, our career, and what we would name our children. Lately though, I find myself so wrapped up in the present and my plans for the next year that thinking about ten years down the road is on the back burner. Can I really picture myself ten years from now? If I do it won’t be accurate. No matter how clear the picture I have in my head of my life when I’m almost thirty is, I know when it arrives the picture will be different.

I know in the next ten years I will continue my education. God willing, I will love the medical field as much as I anticipate and continue to medical school after I receive my bachelor’s degree. In ten years, I will be finished with medical school and doing a residency either in pediatrics or oncology. I hope to have found someone to spend the rest of my life with whether we are married yet or not. I know I want to wait until later to have kids because of my job, but life has a way of twisting our plans and I could be married and have three kids by that point for all I know. I see myself happy with whatever I am pursuing in life. I also see myself still trying to figure everything out, I’m not going to fool myself by thinking I will have my life tied up in a neat little bow before I’m thirty. I don’t have the floor plan for my custom built house or an idea of the city I want to end up in.

If there is one thing I’ve learned in the last few years, it’s that the things I want now may not be the same as what I want ten years or even ten months from now. Honestly, I love the idea of not knowing how my life will be in ten years. There is no way I can predict the obstacles and opportunities that will come my way and the possibilities are endless. In ten years, the only thing I can see with confidence is contentment.

This is Why You Answer Your Phone!

“In a moment of crisis whom do you call?”

This question was actually a lot more difficult than I thought it would be. If I could only call one person, I guess my choice would depend on the situation I was in. Since a fickle post is something no one wants to read I guess I will have to choose just one person. I would call my cousin, Brett. I don’t have any brothers but he has always been like an older brother to me. We have become very close in the past year. Whenever I need it he always gives me the best advice and pep talks. I can tell him things without being afraid of what he’ll think of me and he always tells me the truth. I know if I was in a situation where I needed him I know he would be there for me. He also has a really level head and would know exactly what to do. Besides, if anyone was trying to hurt me his big brother instincts would kick in and he would come kick some butt anyway. I wouldn’t have to worry about being afraid to tell my parents something or calling a friend who has no idea how to help me. I know my Bretty boy will always have my back!

All Alone in a Crowded Room

Is this post supposed to be about aliens? My brain didn’t get the memo. Call me sentimental, but the first thing I think about when I hear the question “Are we alone?” is not the possibility of life somewhere other than our planet, but the fact that no matter how many people we are surrounded by, we sometimes feel very alone. Sometimes we all have the feeling that we’re misunderstood, that even though we have tons of friends and loved ones, we will always have to fend for ourselves. When I’m upset it doesn’t matter how many times someone says, “I know just how you feel”, I still will not believe them. Though we may have those days were we feel all to ourselves in a world of billions of people we are never truly alone. Everyone has someone that loves them even if they don’t realize or feel it. I grew up knowing I was never alone because I was raised in a Christian household, always having my guardian angel with me as a kid. So when I am having a bad day where I just want to strangle anyone who attempts to talk to me I remind myself that, even though we have all felt alone, we never actually are.

"Summertime and the Livin' is Easy"

The problem with summer is that it’s never long enough. No matter how much I try to squeeze into my summer schedule, some things always get left out. One thing I’ve always wanted to do is go on a road trip across the U.S. before college. I would pack up a Jeep with my closest friends and start traveling with no final destination in mind. Part of the reason I hate going on trips is because there is so much planning and stress about money. We wouldn’t bring any kind of technological navigation, just old-fashioned roadmaps to help us find amazing places we never knew existed. On the trip I would want to climb a mountain in the Rockies because it’s something I’ve always wanted to do. We would leave right after graduation and just wake up every day with no game plan. When family or friends had a few days free I would fly them out to wherever we were to enjoy it with us. On the trip, we would watch an MLB game in every stadium in America.

Every other summer my dad’s side of the family has a family reunion. Our family from all over the country comes to Branson and we spend the week together. If I had unlimited funds, I would pay for all of us to go to an island and spend the week there instead. We would rent yachts and spend time on the ocean. We all look forward to the family event because it is the only time we get to see our relatives from far away. We have always wanted to go somewhere farther away but never had the money so I would definitely take the opportunity to treat my family.

After our family reunion I would have to take few weeks to go to Camp Re-New-All, where I am a counselor. With all my money, I would make sure everyone came to camp for free.

Here, Let Me Show You

I think the principle responsibility of an educated person is to educate others. People can be educated in many different ways. A person can receive what we call a “formal” education, they could only go to elementary school, or continue all the way through college. A person who earns a college degree is not better than one who doesn’t continue past the fourth grade, but most would agree there are significant differences between the two levels. We learn and become educated in many other ways outside of a formal education and that type of learning is just as useful and important in everyday life.

I think no matter what kind of education someone receives, whether someone learns all there is to know about the depression era or they learn to farm the family land, they should use their education to positively impact the world and share their knowledge with those around them. If someone is educated, but keeps it to themselves and neither utilizes their knowledge or passes it on to others, it is useless. I can go through school to become a doctor, but if I never see a patient for as long as I live, it serves no purpose. An education does not just consist of the things we memorize in school about geometric shapes and photosynthesis, though that is an important part. The education we receive through school, our upbringing, and our surroundings is unique to us and is meant to serve each individual in a different way; and is meant to allow us to serve others in our own way as well.

Eye used spell Czech four this art tickle.

Many things come to mind when trying to think of what this world would be better off without, but once I start thinking I realize that although many inventions may have shortcomings, they have still improved our quality of life. I finally came to an invention I realize our world can, and probably should, live without.

The spell check function found in the Microsoft Office programs has dramatically changed the way we think and write. I can think of multiple times I have tried to remember how to spell a word and someone has said, “Just type it into word, it’ll correct it for you.” I will not deny this invention is useful, I utilize it all the time. It is simple and we use it without even thinking. I think that is where the problem lies. In a world where technology and text-lingo are becoming more common, our critical thinking and willingness to actually use our brain is depleting. Instead going through the process of finding out how to spell a word, and increasing the chance of actually ingraining it in our memory, we type it into Word without a second thought knowing we can do the same thing when we can’t remember it later. Though it may be a time saver, I think it is costing us more in the long run. Will students who grow up using spell check from a young age ever learn how to proofread something they have to hand write without the power of this technology? I think spell check, when used properly, is a useful tool to catch the occasional mistake we may miss when proofreading; however it has become a lazy tool that reduces our ability to function without it. For example, I spelled ‘occasional’ with two ‘s’ when I wrote it in the previous sentence and spell check corrected it automatically. If I hadn’t noticed, I would still be spelling it ‘occassional’.

All It Takes is a Little Courage

Courage comes to a person when there may be an easy way out, but the right thing to do is choose the difficult alternative. It is doing the things that do not come easily to us. Courage is not always public, in movies we see and stories we hear an act of courage takes place in a very public arena; shouting to the girl getting on the plane that you love her or finally standing up to the boss who took you for granted all those years. For the student who is afraid to ask for help because they grew up doing things on their own, asking that question in class took courage. For the kid who couldn’t hit the baseball on his first day of little league, going back that next practice and taking another swing took courage. Acts of courage happen every day that no one even notices. Courage doesn’t have to save someone’s life or be an act of heroism. I think the most courageous people are those that do what they know is right, and do not let the fear of what other people think of them stop them.
Sometimes, all it takes is that split second of pure clarity, not thinking of who or what stands in your way and doing what terrifies you. To me, courage is taking that deep fear inside of us and showing it we’re not afraid anymore.

If I Ever Write Down My Story, Here's Page 217

217

I had always like being around my sister and her friends. Kayla took me with her when I begged her enough. Her friend Jacque had a baby in the beginning of November 2006. I went to the baby shower, and along to the hospital when Landyn was born. I had always loved being around babies, but I was the youngest in our house so I didn’t get the opportunity very often. I remember multiple Christmases I had asked for a baby brother or sister with no success.

For some reason Jacq loved when I came over to see Landyn, I imagine I was a pretty annoying eleven-year old. She still brings up how I would come over and just hold Landyn for hours. When she and Kayla went Black Friday shopping the day after Thanksgiving, I lay on the couch all day with three week-old Landyn while he slept curled up on my chest. Kayla and I spent time over there the whole winter; making gingerbread houses, teaching Landyn to make his “surprise face”, and getting stuck there the first night of the big ice storm we had in early 2007.

I felt cool spending so much time with my older sister and her friends, like a grown-up. Now that I am more grown-up, Landyn and I are still best buds. He has two younger siblings now but we have to take adventures by ourselves every once in a while. One day I picked him up after school. He had only been in kindergarten for a couple of months so I was asking him all kinds of questions about it. When I asked him who his best friend at school was he promptly replied, “You!” He wouldn’t budge when I clarified that I wanted to know who his best friend was in kindergarten.

I think back to when I was eleven and had a tiny little baby in my arms and can’t believe how big he is getting. He’ll always be my little Lando.

Go For It

The best word to describe me would be “ambitious”. To me, ambition is not just wanting to have a successful career or make a lot of money. An ambitious person does not settle for the bare minimum, and neither do I. I aim to extract the most I can out of life, whether it is a small project or deciding on a career. I do not take the easy way out because I know the payoff of hard work and dedication. I want to make an impact with my life and give it meaning in the things I achieve. I love challenges because they make me better. I work best when something is at stake so I go after the things I want, even though I may not get them. Throughout high school, I knew I wanted to be first in my class so I put in the hard work needed to achieve my goal. When I started applying for colleges, I applied for my dream schools knowing I could not get into them if I never tried. I never want to settle in life. I could be perfectly happy living in my hometown my whole life, but if I have the opportunity to explore the world and make a better life for myself, I’m going to take it. I have the ambition to be successful in life, whether it be in my career or the things I am passionate about.

One Medium Suitcase

Here’s what’s going down. I’m being taken away from my home, family, and friends and only have one hour to pack the items I want to take in a medium size suitcase. I can’t take any electronics or technology driven items. These are the things I would grab:

First, I would take my great grandfather’s wedding ring. I never got to meet that set of great grandparents because they died before I was born. It is engraved From Anna to Edwin 1929 and makes me feel close to my family, even the family I never met.

I would take my fuzzy pink blanket my dad got me for my birthday when I was younger. That particular birthday I told my dad he had to pick out a present all by himself and he got me the blanket. I sleep with it all the time and it would remind me of my dad when I started to miss him.

I would bring the Bible I got for Christmas two years ago because it is very special to me. Being away from my family and friends would be very difficult and reading scripture would be comforting and help me keep faith.

I would bring my scarf I received from my sister Amanda. She got it on a trip to Europe and I think of her every time I wear it. It would remind me of all the time I got to spend with her and all the places she has been able to see.

Although I already have a blanket, I would also bring the small St. Louis Cardinals blanket my family gave me. One of my favorite things is spending time with my dad at Cardinals games. Our family loves the Cardinals so it would also remind me of the times I spent with my cousins cuddled up under the blankets watching games at their house.

My giraffe pillow pet would have to be stuffed into the suitcase as well. My sister bought it for me on a late night trip to Wal-Mart when our power was out at home. I had wanted one for a long time and it always reminds me of her and all the random things we do together. I always bring it when I stay with my cousins because my little cousin loves to snuggle with it so it would remind me of all the sleepovers I’ve had with them.

I would bring A Tree Grows in Brooklyn by Betty Smith. I stole the book from my sister when she was reading it. I was young at the time and it was the first novel I had ever read. I would think of my sister and reading it would give me optimism for whatever situation I was in because of the theme of hope in the book.

A “Keepsake Box” full of letters, family pictures, and keepsakes would also be stuffed into my bag. It has notes from sweet customers, letters from far away friends, keepsakes from my summer camp, and many things from throughout my childhood. I would be able to reminisce on the great childhood I had and remember all the sweet people that are most important to me in my life.

I would have to pack at least one Uncle John’s Bathroom Reader. My mom and I are connoisseurs of random knowledge and I’ve grown up learning random knowledge from this series of books. It would remind me of my mother and give me something to keep myself occupied.

Lastly, I would pack the pictures I have in frames around my room. I have pictures of me with my dad, childhood photos, photos from big events like prom, and pictures of my best friends in frames they have made for me. These pictures are of the people close to my heart and I would be able to look at them every day.

Troublemaker

At our family gatherings, it never fails that someone brings up how my dad was always the troublemaker when he and my aunts and uncle were growing up. My dad has one brother, Gary, and three sisters. I never hear much about the girls, just the shenanigans Dad and Gary got into. Dad was the older of the two and seemed to be a little less… well behaved than Gary. A particular favorite for them to tell, and for me to listen to, happened when Dad was around nine years old. Now to get the full effect of this story, just picture my six foot three, three hundred pound father sitting next to his littler (in both senses of the word) brother as they both struggle to get the words out through their laughter.

It was a nice day and the two of them had been playing around outside on the farm. Dad had gone exploring and found a shotgun Grandpa had left inside the old truck. As I have previously alluded to, Dad always found a way to get himself and Gary into trouble. (This is about the point in the story when everyone realizes what’s going to happen and starts to smile and shake their head.) Dad proceeded to put the gun together, something he had seen Grandpa do many times before. Dad may have been a troublemaker, but he always put safety first (so he says), because he decided it was best to lock Gary inside the truck before he actually shot the gun. With Gary safely inside, Dad shot the gun and managed to shoot the neighbor’s roof. He put the gun back, went inside with Gary, and “went to bed” in the middle of the afternoon.

Grandma was a bit suspicious of Dad going to sleep with the sun still out. She didn’t have to wonder for very long though because one of the neighbors came over and told Grandma what had happened. I’ll just say Grandpa wasn’t too happy when he found out about that one…

Looking Up

One person I look up to is Joseph E. Murray. He was a surgeon who performed the first human organ transplant in 1954. He transplanted a kidney from a healthy man to his identical twin brother.  He also completed the first successful transplant to a nonidentical patient in 1959. He attended college and the College of the Holy Cross and went on to attend Harvard Medical School, where he graduated in 1943. He enlisted in the Army Medical Corps in 1944 where he gained experience using skin grafts on burned soldiers. This experience is what led him to explore organ transplantation. I look up to him because he was a pioneer in this new type of medicine. At the time, many people in his profession discouraged him and even told him he was trying to play God. He blazed his own trail and made the world a better place by believing in the work he was doing. I also look up to him because he was strong in his Catholic faith and vigilantly navigated the fine lines between science and the church. He even advised the Vatican on current science issues.
Most of his career dealt with plastic surgery, but not the kind that may come to mind. He treated patients with physical deformities or those that had been in accidents. He used his knowledge and love for helping people to bring about a major change in the world of medicine. I hope to make a difference in the world just as he did.

You may recognize another role model of mine from catching glimpses of her on “Good Morning America” while you get ready for the day. Robin Roberts is a news anchor for the show where she has worked since 1995 and she became co-anchor in 2005. This woman is so inspirational to me because of her optimism and fortitude. She was diagnosed with breast cancer in June of 2005 and fought a very public battle. Through chemotherapy and radiation she continued working as much as possible and always had a smile on her face. She looked at her ailment with a positive attitude and used the publicity to raise awareness for others in the same situation. She beat her breast cancer and encouraged countless people along the way. Now, five years after ending her fight with breast cancer she is battling another illness, MDS (myelodysplastic syndrome), which attacks a person’s bone marrow and blood. She just came back to Good Morning America after a six month leave of absence to undergo intense chemotherapy and a bone marrow transplant from her sister. She has used this recent bump in the road to encourage people to sign up to be blood marrow donors. She has as beautiful a smile as ever and is using the struggles God has placed in her life to help others and not become discouraged.

The last person I look up to is Jodi Picoult. Picoult is an author and her last seven books have hit number one on The New York Times best seller list. She studied at Princeton then went on to pursue a master’s degree in education at Harvard. She has written twenty-one novels, of which I have read at least nine. She writes about issues in life no one wants to live with and almost always manages to involve the courtroom or medicine. Of the books I have had the opportunity to read, she has explored the issues of suicide, the family dynamics of a child with cancer, a supposed prophet on death row, a school shooting, a child with a debilitating disease, a pregnant Amish teenager, and a father living on life support. In every single one of her books, she challenges her readers to look at these issues from a variety of viewpoints and clearly illustrates that there are always grey areas. I look up to her because she has a talent that allows her to touch a person with only her words, that is something I have always aimed to achieve. She is a talented author and one that has inspired me through her writing.

A Picture is Worth 241 Words

I decided to go to Florida when I saw my great uncle at a Fourth of July celebration two weeks before the trip. He told my Dad and I about their upcoming trip to Florida and I mentioned I didn’t really remember the trip we took when I was a kid.

Long story short, I ended packing my bags and heading down there with them. It was the summer before my eighth grade year. We went to the beach one day but it was about to storm so we only got to stay for a few minutes before the clouds rolled and turned the sky an eerie color.

We returned to the beach two days later. We stopped by a discount beach store before we hit the sand to buy a couple of boogie boards to play with in the waves. My two cousins and I played in the water for a while, taking turns on the boogie board. Within a couple of hours we were thoroughly exhausted and laid down on the sand to rest. My great uncle had the genius idea to bury us in the sand and the three of us agreed to do it. After we were covered from neck to toe, they shoved the boogie boards under our heads and told us to pretend we were sleeping for the picture.
